Re: The Board Track Racer, Briggs powered

No pics today, but after all the work yesterday I'm happy to say the fork is finally finished. I'm just gonna add some words for now.

I finish welded the dropouts and smoothed them all out. When I put the wheel in the wheel sat a little funny. I used a Park tool fork clamp/gauge and sure enough one of the legs was pulled back about 3mm. I cold set that back into place and things were lined up again. But, because of that, the right side dropout was now crooked. I straightened it out and now the wheel sits perfect!

I thought everything was fine until I realized I welded the dropouts about 5mm higher than the old dropouts. So now my brake caliper was mounted to low. Crap. Luckily the adapter had enough meat to allow me to saw off a section and drill and tap two new holes. So now the caliper fits again and it also sits parallel to the fork so it looks a little better. I also drilled a hole in the fork to run the cable internally.

Now I'm working on the Avid BB5 caliper to make it look older. I removed all the plastic, cut off the barrel adjuster and it's mount and rotated the arm to a different location that will work with the internal cable routing. I think you guys are gonna like it! Pics tomorrow morning.

The front brake works. I'm not going to use the copper piece though. It doesn't look good. I also need to finish the cleanup on the caliper.

Here's a stock caliper.

Re: The Board Track Racer, Briggs powered

These damn Holidays are really getting in the way of me doing work.

Today I dropped off some parts at the machinist to get TIG welded. I'm also having him bore the freewheel adapter for the pedals.

Yesterday I welded up a new intake and got the carb mounted. It just so happens that a VW lug wrench fits a Bing carb perfectly. I'm not real sure I like the angle the carb is at, but it allows me to get the engine started again. I have a feeling the carb placement and exhaust are gonna take some trial an error before I find something that looks good.

I have the next two days off. I hope to take it for a spin next week.

Re: The Board Track Racer, Briggs powered

Thanks! The 5mm housing will fit the inside diameter of 1/4" copper.

Yesterday I welded up the frame and added some gussets. I got the bike all put back together and also set up a temporary pedal start chain. I have been having issues with the new carb being adjusted right. I had the engine running good last night. We paused to put a seat on quick, then it wouldn't start back up... :x

I also noticed that I have a lot of flex in the jack shaft so I'm going to ave to add a couple more small gussets there.

I almost got to take a test spin in the snow last night though.

Great work Beau.
Do you think that it would be possible for you to post a closeup photo of your throttle assembly in the carburator?
I'll be working on this part soon and need ideas :D
Thanks a lot and keep rollin'

Re: The Board Track Racer, Briggs powered

Straight vinegar. Just the regular stuff you buy at the grocery.

Re: The Board Track Racer, Briggs powered

good to know...I was telling a buddy about the process and he thought it was some kind of industrial strenght stuff...

Re: The Board Track Racer, Briggs powered

Industrial strength?

I guess it could have a higher acidity. The stuff off the shelf has 5% acidity I think. You could use a higher acidity vinegar, it would just be more corrosive. Meaning it would take less time, or burn up your parts if you are not careful.

Re: The Board Track Racer, Briggs powered

Well, the engine runs fine. But it won't run hooked up to the jack shaft. The clutch has a bushing in it, not a bearing, and it seems to bind with the force of the chain and belt pulling at each other. I need to do some more thinking. I have to find a way to get rid of the binding.

Re: The Board Track Racer, Briggs powered

I'm still trying to get the dnam carb adjusted to work with this engine. I might have to go back to the old one.

I did ride the bike down the alley last night though. :D

Re: The Board Track Racer, Briggs powered

i ran a tecumsh carb on mine with adjustable jets and it ran great. i tried a honda moped carb on mine in the begining similar to yours and couldn't get it to run right either.

Re: The Board Track Racer, Briggs powered

I can't get this thing running right. I think the compression may be bad. Our tester is bad though.

I modified the manifold to run the stock carb, but it won't run with the chain on. From what I read, the stock carb is only suppose to make the engine "run" and not idle/rev much.

The stock carb is also a suction carb, and I'm feeding it as a gravity carb would be fed. I don;t know if that makes a difference of not.

Back to square one. Test the compression, set the points...blah blah blah. The joys of turning a 50's engine into a modern marvel.
