Some of them act as wheel safeties, some people claim that they reduce flex. I could see that in some designs, others clearly don't do jack. They are usually just clamped down with the wheel nuts.

on old spindly forks sure but on a solid schwinn type fork i doubt it
Original ones are almost never as well made as the ones in this thread. Just thin tubes with a flattened spot w/a hole for the axle.
The bike turned out great. Nothing outragious. Just pure class.
