This morning I was working with another guy lifting an old hot tub out of a deck and while were working a police officer walks around the side of the house to check to see if there was a break in and he seen us working and just shook his head and chuckled, and after he explained that a neighbor had called saying there was some suspicious trucks in the drive way and they knew the owners was out of town. he asked if I was the one that buys and fixes bikes and I said yes I was and he told me to go upto the police station and talk to the evidence guy about the bikes they collect from around town because all they do with them is cut them up and send them off for scrap after 90 days.

That is something I never thought would happen, some police station do auctions like at that property room auction site does for the police.

back when I was young they did that but now I guess they find it just as easy to just scrap them, and the cop said some of them are like brand new. It would be nice to have some easy flip bikes with the weather as hot as it is around here I havent felt like being out stripping bikes for parts

I receive all the bikes from 4 police agencies around our county.I started a program with a homeless shelter so that I can full time rebuild them and give them out to the residents at the shelter.I usually receive roughly 1000 to 2000 bikes a year and i'm able to fix and give out anywhere from 300 to 400 bikes per year to people in need. Some of the nicer bikes are fixed and sold to fund the program with supplies and what doesn't get used is scraped for additional funding.Never once in 5 years of doing this have I had a vintage bike come through...

Maybe when I am riding my bike I should make a sign to pur on it saying I will take your unwanted bike to save before you scrap them.

That's cool man.

That is awesome Kreep, Most of the bikes I rebuild I sell for between $5 and $40 each which seems to be a good price point in my area. from time to time Im able to sell one for more.

In San Antonio they have an auction. The wife and I got 5 bikes for $25. They were all department store bikes but $5 eack was a deal. I gave 2 away, sold 2, 1 fro $40, and 1 for $30, wife still has hers.

Finally had a day I could go up to the pd and talk to the officer about the bikes they have. It still has to go thru the city manager but It looks like I should be getting the bikes for $5 a bike but have to buy all the bikes they have, He said they had about 20 bikes right now so the first lot might sting a little

Not really if its 20 bikes that's 100 bucks if they are in decent shape put them on craigsslist at 15 a peice then the ones in good shape sell for 25 an the junk you can part out easy I see an easy 300 buck flip just my .02

In the big picture that aint anything for all those bikes and I will be trying to flip them as fast as I can. but it is when you have been unemployed for a while and thats your normal bike budget for the month
