Re: Wish me luck - Motherload!!!

We'll see how big a boat, my friend. The whole deal is touch and go.

This person is rather odd, to say the least. If I thought it was in good taste, I would share some of his emails. Eccentric older bicycle enthusiast is putting it mildly. I can see something of myself in him. And my troubling future.

He has stuff going back to the twenties.

Please take a camera and post some pics! Sounds like a fun trip!

Re: Wish me luck - Motherload!!!

Well, that turned into a big bunch of nothing.

Guy contacts me in response to a craigslist post. I was looking for beater cruisers. Says he has a couple hundred bikes in his barn. Sends me several eccentric, rambling emails over the next few days trying to set up a date and time, but never actually setting up a date and time! And then stops all contact.

Gotta love craigslist.

Re: Wish me luck - Motherload!!!

I can relate to that . this guy comes up to us at a swap meet and says he is interested in a set of wheels i have. Says he wants to build a cruiser. Said he had been collecting parts since he was a kid and had some behive springers and stuff he wanted to swap for the wheelset. Gave me a phone number...address and everything. called and went by there several times and he was always gone. Or just left....I think you call these people deranged or simply nuts. So dont feel bad it happens to everybody .

Re: Wish me luck - Motherload!!!

That sucks. I freelanced at a company and a girl there who said her dad ( who'd retired from sales ) would go to look at big expensive RVs on the weekends and spend the day haggling with the salesman and then walk out just before signing the contract. It was his way of getting back at all the buyers he couldn't close the deal with. How messed up is that? There are some freakin' weird people out there.

Re: Wish me luck - Motherload!!!

That does stink. I think most of us have been played that way though. A couple weeks ago, there was an old school chrome Schwinn Predator BMX bike for $30, very nice. I was the first to email the lady. She gave me her address and we worked out a time for me to come over. Then, right before I leave to go pick it up, she emails me back saying a guy is coming over to pick it up. I was confused so I asked her if that guy was named Zach (that's my name). She said no, he's coming from an hour away. I thought to myself... ok what's going on lol. Even though I was disappointed, I thought, "Why would I give a crazy lady $30?" .. so that made me feel better lol.

Well, I finally made it out to the big bike pile. There are a few promising frames, but most of it is pretty far gone. The majority are cheap discount store bikes from the 60's and 70's. A few nice girls frames. Both of the skiptooth bikes I found were a bit too rusty to be structurally sound. I'll give them a second chance, as I may be out here again.

I nabbed a few parts, but not much. Just a couple of shifters and a badly weathered leather seat. I may go back for a Schwinn Racer, Traveler, Varsity and several banana seats. All are in rough shape, however.

Over all, not too impressive. Well, you gotta play to win. Luckily , I just found out about another place up north. Supposedly a few acres covered in bikes. We'll see...

Well, when you're a little... off... in the head, and you like bicycles, then that is what you turn into. I have gotten a few bicycles from a crazy old guy myself. He has some real nice stuff, but it's mixed in with all the used tyres and tubes he has stacked up all over the place. I took to heart the mantra of "if i don't work, it goes out."

But I do have one comment for you, Slacker: if you go back, you might want to pick up the yellow bicycle on the left in the last photograph you posted. I don't know if you're into racers, but that looks to be a rather nice Panasonic from the early 1970's. If it's in good condition, it's worth some money; check on eBay for Schwinn World to get an idea. I have one similar to that, and I like it. :)

If you're very lucky, it might be a Voyageur, but I can't tell if the rear fork is chromed or not.

Wow, scary stuff, I hope I don't end up like that... At least you didn't end up down in the pit (...it puts the lotion in the basket...)
