A quick note about galling. When sanding like I did yesterday leads to galling from the heat generated when smoothing aluminum.

Later today when I get started will rig up an oil pan with water and hit it with the orbital, to finish getting it smooth and to take off the aluminum powder re-attached to the chainwheel.

I have a chunk of quartz countertop in the garage I take my 9x11 sandpaper sheet and stick it down flat. Usually just a couple pieces of 2 sided tape
Handy dandy spray bottle of water to keep it wet. Then work my material back and forth (figure 8) on the surface. Helps with flatness

Hit it with wet 220 today

Followed by wet 600

Has that feel to it that's a smooth and soft to the touch... favorite state...

Edit: Will pick up a new mask tomorrow for starting.polishing.

Before polishing today, I cleaned up the insets with the dremel wire wheel and tip.

Finished getting all of the polishing medium off the chainwheel this morning. 95% alcohol quips and paper towels. Achohol Soaked it in a kitchen plate first. ( don't tell the wife)

Thinned some testor's gloss black with some spirits. Applied the black. After it dries considering another coat before applying the red..

So, I took the testor's red metallic and mixed it with some mineral spirits. We've all tried to brush on their metallic paints and always have brush strokes.

I ended up using one of the needles I keep handy for odd jobs in the garage to drip it into each of the 4 areas needed. I hope it turns mor red as it dries. May take a bit to dry. Like tomorrow or the next day.

Edit. The other colors are from the happy lights strung around the garage.

Tested in a spot to see it was solid. Not liquid but not cured.

Glad it Darkened up as the metallic settled under the clear red as it is drying.

Installed the chainwheel today.

Need some more off road rides to finish dialing everything in. I noticed with the hot and cold that we've had the back wheel needs to be finished on truing.

I like to think it ties it together like a guard on a cruiser does.

That chainring looks right at home on that Monark! You're right, it really does tie the whole bike together!

A lot has happened in the last week. Some good news and some bad. The good doesn't outweigh the bad. We had a tragedy that occurred in the family. I won't go into details, just that it's sad and maddening.

The good news is the hangman temporarily passed me by at work. After weeks of knowledge transfer, the delivery on two of my projects is at high risk because no one can easily step into my shoes and do the work that I can.

So, I get three more months to finish delivery and continue to set the direction for the many projects that I work on. It gives me the time to pick my new job, vs taking something I might not like.

Bike-wise, I picked up a 7/8 chuck reamer that I can ream the seat post with, to remove the welded pipe ridge inside. The reamer doesn't fit any of my drills, so i need to find someone in the neighborhood with a drill I can use todo it.
