Re: Flex{\\\}Liner 7 TwinFlex Spaceliner 6/6 WINGS, Yes WINGS!!!

Have you tried the hood ornament right smack dab in the middle of your stem?

I know you have no intention of keeping it around... but that angle iron has grown on me the more I've looked at it.

I played arouned with that a little bit. It was cool, but not quite right.

It must be the Schwinn Coppertone paint. Someone should eventually use a couple of Exerciser guards for springers or strurs or frame members and leave the Schwinn Exerciser decal showing.

Thanks for the grips, you keeping them or just teasing me?

Grips are staying.

Re: Flex{\\\}Liner 7 TwinFlex Spaceliner 6/7 Wings + New Spring

Working on my idea to make the wally spring fit, function, and look better.
I cut up the piston section of one of my springs

WP_001761.jpg

I will run the spring bolt through this (which is a perfect fit). It will help align the spring and also give me some preload adjustment.

WP_001762.jpg

Here it is assembled. I will probably paint the spring and a couple of other parts with the red.

Re: Flex{\\\}Liner 7 TwinFlex Spaceliner 6/7 Wings + New Spring

SInce my rear wheel is getting laced, I slapped on the 24" Thick Brick wheel to test the spring. It feels much better than the chrome spring and operates smoothly. While I had it outside, I did a couple of mockup photos.

Re: Flex{\\\}Liner 7 TwinFlex Spaceliner 6/7 Wings + New Spring

I had removed the shifter to measure the cable travel on it and I decided to play with the 54 Chevy hoodie.
Check out how close it follows the op tube curve.
I also think the eagle angle accents the handlebars too.

WP_001752.jpg

Obviously my knees would hit the wings, so I am thinking I might use this here with the wings cut off.
The width of the eagle is perfect for the top tubes.
The wings are pretty cool and sorta like caddy fins. These might just go on the drops and the other wings on the upper rear struts.

Re: Flex{\\\}Liner 7 TwinFlex Spaceliner 6/7 Wings + New Spring

While the shifter was off, I also played around with my skiptooth idea. I still plan on cutting out my shifter from one of the swirling teardrops in the ring. The remainder will be mounted under and around the shifter. It will be anodized red too.

And finally, I did some full mockups outside.

Re: Flex{\\\}Liner 7 TwinFlex Spaceliner 6/7 Wings + New Spring

Let me know your thoughts on
- the new spring
- the eagle hoodie
- the skiptooth
- the flow of the bike in general.

I like the eagle alot (once I remove the wings), but there is one drawback to it. It kind of hides the fact that this bike has twin top tubes.

The new spring looks new, wonder if there is some way you can paint it and get a vintage looking spring to put over it, so the new spring will do the work and the old spring will give the look.

Hood ornament is cool, but I'm not feeling it on the top tubes.

The skiptooth, that's a whatever to me, they are cool, but don't stand out to me as much as they use to.

The flow of the bike is in a state of flux right now until you lose the angle iron and put the final rear suspension arms on it, then I can say.

The bike is looking pretty slick though, but the only thing now is making the new spring not look so new.

Re: Flex{\\\}Liner 7 TwinFlex Spaceliner 6/7 Wings + New Spring

Thanks for the feedback. I don't know if I have a big problem with the spring looking newer. But I get what you are saying.
I don't like the idea of covering the spring completely because that kinda detracts from the focus of the coolness of have the rear suspension.
Plus, the bottom 1/4 to 1/3 needs to move and not hit against a cover.

Peat when you made the joke about the Vienna Sausage can, at first I laughed and brushed it off, but it got me to thinkin'. Those cans are pretty small, what if I just used an old can or an actual VS can and only covered the top half leaving the bottom spring exposed. Maybe an old ratty can with some cool logo or sticker put on it.

Maybe a Rat Fink or other graphics or this sticker I have

Re: Flex{\\\}Liner 7 TwinFlex Spaceliner 6/7 Wings + New Spring

I think if I use the eagle hoodie on the top bars I may be messing with the sweeping flow of the Spaceliner frame too much.
I also really like the look of seeing the twin top tubes and the eagle hides 90% of that. Just cuz it fits don't mean itz right!

The shifter works well there and adds a little visual mass to the "tank" area.
I still think I am going to like the skiptooth there, but we'll see. It's kind of a lacework, so it's not visually bulky.

As always, I would still apreciate feedback from others. I am just slapping stuff up there and seeing what sticks.

Re: Flex{\\\}Liner 7 TwinFlex Spaceliner 6/7 Wings + New Spring

That hood ornament is exactly where I placed mine on my Build Off bike. That makes me conflicted. I like it there, and that makes us some kind of ornament-brothers. On the other hand, mine's no longer unique.

Re: Flex{\\\}Liner 7 TwinFlex Spaceliner 6/7 Wings + New Spring

JMO, but I think you may be your reaching here. Sticking that hood ornamante and that chain wheel on that bike just because you have them- is like when those hillbillys started welding barbed wire and horseshoes to the Rat Rods they built from junk that was left in a field. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for injenuity (spell check) but if you install anything on your bike it probably should serve a functional purpose or have a true asthetic value. Change for the sake of change means nothing. Make the effort count! I dig your build, hope to see it in the winners circle. Not criticisizing, just an observation. Thanks for reading, Moody.

We must be hoodie brothas!!! Just when you were posting on my thread, I was posting on yours with a courtesy hood ornament back page bump.
I love your first mockup and I like the hoodie on your bike top tube. I just don't think it works as well on mine. I will have hood ornament parts on my build though. Definitely the kickstand and wings somewhere from my smaller hoodie and I still may cut the wing fins from the 54 hoodie and use them.

Moody, I appreciate your feedback and honesty. I am very visual, so I throw a lot of stuff up there, so that I can then sit back and noodle on from every angle. It keeps it fun. I totally get where you are coming from and that's why I invited feedback. This bike is for me and it is gonna be a rider. I want cool functional (suspension) and aestetic (lighted chainguard) features, but I am not out to build another fun bizarro bike like BEER RUN or Fugsley. Keep the feedback coming, I really appreciate it.

Thanks for the compliments and feedback yooth. Gonna measure and probably by a can of Vie-een-err sausages tomorrow. :)
I like the beefiness of the skippy and the cool design and the skippiness. I doubt I will ever actually build a true skippy and I liked it when I saw chainrings as ornamentation while I was on vacation in SE Asia last month.
It's tough, but I have to kinda look past the angle iron visually, but I tell you what, this little test rig is the way to go to get all of the suspension angles, lengths, and components right before I cut, weld, and bolt up the finals struts.
Appreciate the feedback.

Re: Flex{\\\}Liner 7 TwinFlex Spaceliner 6/7 Wings + New Spring

A lot of creativity and cool stuff going on here. This is one of those builds that I'm anxious to see it finished yet don't want the building process to end.

Tough call on the hood ornament. Glad it's not mine :D

Joe, that's a pretty cool compliment. Thanks!
I should have the rear end worked out soon and can replace the angle iron struts.
Once I looked at the photos more, it was actually pretty easy not to use the eagle over the twin tubes. I think I will still use the wing fins from it though.

Just needs to gets me a Vie-Een-Err sausage can now.

Re: Flex{\\\}Liner 7 TwinFlex Spaceliner 6/7 Wings + New Spring

You know, I stuck that eagle on top of my springer as a gag, but now the bike doesn't look the same without it! I would have never missed it if I had never stuck it on there, but I wouldn't have known I NEED it either. You stick anything on there you want, if it doesn't work for you, pull it off, but if you never try it you will never know.

Most of the innovative things I see on here are things guys TRY, not sure that it will work, but they try it anyway. Keep making mistakes, that's where innovation comes from.

I think I'm preaching to the choir, you are the least unafraid person to try something on a bike that I know!
