*****Update***** Settled on a name - Bar Fly. Hopefully will get some mockups done this week. Looking forward to the build!

I've been sitting on this frame for a while now, waiting for BBO8. There are a few themes that will come to light in the next few weeks, but first things first, I need to start gathering parts to build her up.

Very nice frame!
How about "Straight Laced Suzie" for a name?

Luke.
Or STD for Straight tube D(you choose)......

Re: Straight bar... She needs a name...

Great frame.
How about "Dive Bar"
Hard to come up with a name without a feel for the direction you're going.
Good luck.

Re: Bar Fly

I managed to find a couple hours to pull some parts together and dry fit some parts.

I pulled this off the shelf - it will go perfectly with this build. An original Schwinn locking fork that will work with this frame if I ever to a proper restoration. I got it from AS Boltnut on the forum.

The look I am going for is more stretched, so I flipped the crown.

I'm loving the setback post from slowriderz, but I may see if he can make one that is longer - maybe 7-8 inches of setback.

I need to do some thinking on those wheels... I'm thinking maybe a 24" in the rear with a 26" up front may be the ticket...

Re: Bar Fly

I see flasks, jiggers, breathalyzers, swizzle sticks in the future.

Re: Bar Fly

Spent a little time on Bar Fly today.

This is a black rim. It will not do...

So I busted out some sand paper, a little self etching primer, and I made it red.

A little sanding and another coat and this run should be good to go.

Got something in the mail today... Pics later, but now it's time to BBQ.

Re: Bar Fly

The fork has a pretty cool patina on it, so I am going to clean them a little, then spray them with some semi-gloss clear, followed by a matte clear.

With a little clear, they come out a touch darker, and the matte finish helps minimize the shine.

Really happy with how these turned out.

There was a lot of grease on the fork crown. I cleaned that off, then gave it a spray with semi-gloss clear. I'll let it dry a bit, then hit it with the matte clear.

Decided to clear coat the struts - semigloss followed by matte. It really makes the rusty patina pop.

I never learn... I had my rim pretty much good to go, then decided to spray them with a top coat of Rustoleum gloss clear, and the damn paint orange peeled. It's done this before to me - about 50% of the time I suppose. Needless to say, I had to strip, sand and reprime these. Will paint when I get a chance. Pain in the butt...

The springer fork is original, and takes a smaller than standard axle. I have plenty of front wheels, but none that have the right axle diameter, so I had to pull apart a rusty Schwinn S6 wheel I had lying around to scavenge the hub. It's Schwinn, but made in France. (very fancy, no?)

It cleaned up nicely, but the ball bearings are shot. This is a loose bearing hub, so basically all the bearings will fly all over the floor of you aren't careful opening it.

Packed with Phil Wood grease, but it still doesn't roll as smooth as I was hoping - I'll probably have to replace those at some point. For now, though, it's ready to be laced to the front wheel.

Re: Bar Fly - Patina time

I picked up this tank for the straightbar. It's ready for paint, or what have you, but I'm going in a different direction.

I used a three step process to get the patina on. Step 1, vinegar. I don't want an even coat, I want it to look like the rust could have come from the elements over time. I used an acid brush on parts of it, and on others I just dripped the vinegar on.

I set that out in the sun to dry, then went to step 2. Of course, I forgot to photograph that part, but I essentially took a bunch of salt, added some water, dissolved it, then dribbled it over the vinegar. Step 3 was similar to Step 2, but I used hydrogen peroxide. Check out that patina forming!

I let it sit out and get crusty for a couple hours, then I cleaned it off in the sink, dried it well, and it was ready for some clear.

A coat of semi-gloss clear, and a coat of matte clear, and it is good to go. Really happy with how this turned out.

Re: Bar Fly - (Patina Time)

I have experimented with a lot of rust inducing concoctions ...nothing beats vinegar, salt, and a little creativity
....looks good....check out mine...

Rusty Fauxser...

Re: Bar Fly - (Frame, fork, tank mocked up)

I was able to get the frame clear coated a couple nights ago, so I reinstalled the headset (with some new bearings), threw the fork on, and installed the patina and clear coated tank and did a little mocking up.

I like the old patina on the frame (60 years of dings, scratches, paint and rust), but part of me wants to strip it down and paint it matte black...

This is the painted 26" front wheel with the planned white wall installed. Spokes are in the mail...

Resist that urge, any frame can be stripped and painted matte black, only this frame can have that much character

This ^^

The tiger striped patina on that tank is awesome.
