@twojs.bike I just looked the your picture again. You're right, I remember from building wheels that the valve hole goes between the straights.
First time I built wheels, I somehow got them backwards, and they couldn't be trued. Even the guy at the shop was baffled.

I'm now wondering how this will turn out.

At least it doesn't ride like a rodeo bike.

So. I'm out here, trying to make the front wheel stop making rubbing noise.
I get the wheel straight enough that I can see it's not rubbing anywhere.

But, I still hear it rubbing. So, I put my ear next to it so I can zone in on where the noise is coming from. I discovered the spokes at the hub were rubbing against the screws that hold the fender and rack braces.
No problem. Just grind them down.

I can clearly see the spoke aren't rubbing, but it's still making noise.🤬

So. I'm out here going crazy trying to make the front wheel stop making rubbing noises.🤪🤔🤪🤔🤪🤔🤪

Then finally, the most ignorant, not even possible thing pops in my head.🧠

Tire nipples.

Yup. Tire nipples. You know. The little rubber nubs that stick off the tire from the molding process.
That Harvard education finally paying off.👨‍🎓

So. I'm out here trying to pull all of these little nubs off. And every so often I give the wheel a spin, and what happens?

That's right. The rubbing noise is getting quieter.
So. I keep pulling nubs until there are no more nubs.
I give the wheel a spin and....

🤘🖖

Nice detective work.
That saddle makes for a stable work stand. 🙄

😉🤫😆

But it sure is comfy.

I think I'm going to put the 80s messenger saddle back on. It's not terribly uncomfortable, and doesn't make noise.

Frustrating, but I'm glad you found that all you had to do was shave your tires.

Sounds like you figured it out. One trick I use to find the source of noises is to get a long screwdriver, put the handle up to my ear, and touch the tip to various parts of the bike. Works like a doctor’s s stethoscope. In fact, I should probably just buy a stethoscope.

You said the wheels appear to be true, but are they round? Look at it from the side as it spins and see if it has any up and down movement. Maybe they aren't centered on the hub. Or do the tires have off center bulges where they aren't completely seated?

You sure it's not your corduroy pant legs rubbing together? #1970s

I don't think the fenders are original to the bike. When looking down, they are much wider than where they fit the frame.
That front fender is squished between the fork legs like a fat guy in a little jacket.

Any movement from the fender and it rubs. So I'll trim them maybe put some energy on the anvil. I'll make it quit before I go insane.

Ok kids. It's finally all quiet.
I made some proper mounts for the rear rack, and switched to a saddle that doesn't squeek or give me that ghetto lean.(in the ghetto) (Sorry. It popped in my head, thought I'd share.)

Anyway. I'm calling this one done.
It rides real smooth, and doesn't make noise. And doesn't look half bad. Probably not top 10, but I've got no complaints. Finally have the old girl back on the road. I always liked riding this bike, now it can be a daily.

Oh, and did I mention. It doesn't make noise anymore.
I hate tire rub.

All that useless rambling out of the way. Here's how it looks now.

We leave for vacation Thursday, so I'll wait til we get there for final pics.

Now I'll shut up, and go catch up on the other builds.

CONGRATS brother! Another cool rat in the books. Glad you solved the noise issue.
Great clean, but crusty (if that makes sense) vibe to this one.
Have another good vacation, but make sure you don't forget your finished thread!

Saddle up! Diggin' the change in the seat, bike looks tight!

Maybe pull the wheel reflectors for your final photos? Other than that, as KF said above ^^ "clean, but crusty"...and cool!

I knew I forgot something. Kept telling myself to toss those, but too distracted with getting the tires off the fenders.

Nice clean build! I'd be proud to cruise this around the neighborhood. I love the patina, nice job matching the rear rack. With the red accents, very cool. Great build!

Managed a few pictures this morning. Will try some more this afternoon and evening.
