It moves freely enough, problem is it's stretched to the point that it's trying to climb off every few teeth, I'm gonna try to find one for a while then switch to plan B...

First surprise of this build, everything came apart easily! The chain is shot and if I do go skip tooth I'll need to replace the spokes,

and the fenders are hammered but every other part is useable. Gonna have a frosty beverage and stare at this thing for a while....

If ya loosen up the clamp on your bike stand...That frame will go "KLUNK" when it hits the floor. Imagine having your foot hanging out, when you do those sweeping corners in that NoHo parking garage!

Funny you both should say that... I've been wanting to build a klunker for a while now, I like that style of bike and I don't have one I really really want to use these air cooled hubs, they're the main reason I bought this bike

sadly the chain is worn beyond usability

I'm gonna search for one for a few weeks but if I can't use a skip tooth drivetrain on this thing it just might become a klunker

Got a bit distracted from working on the build off bike when this showed up tonight

thanks to Falstaff I finally have a tank for my flightliner

not to mention the rest of the bike, cuz I need another project

I did manage to get all the rusty parts out of their wood bleach bath, and most of the bearings and hub parts out of the bucket of simple green. What ever used to be grease in the rear hub has long since turned into something black and hard, so some bits went back in for a few more days. As I hoped, the caked on grease and dirt protected the chrome on the hubs and they came out great!

I still haven't decided if this thing is gonna turn into a balooner or a klunker so I'm gathering parts for both options....

Thanks to Kirk I now have a nice skip tooth chain in my parts pile, so the bike is gonna go in that direction. I will build a klunker soon but the klunker I want to build will be pretty simple and basic and probly not build off worthy. I'm starting to feel a balooner/bobber/ hotrod bike somewhere in this pile of stuff...

I've been staring at this thing a while now and I finally have a vision of what I want it to be, now I've gotta make some parts fit together. Starting with this chain guard I bought at a swap meet a while back, I put it on my J C Higgins for a while but decided I like that bike better without it. Should work on this one if I can get it to fit, it wasn't meant to fit a straight down tube so I'm going to hack... I mean precisely reposition the mount, it's on with zip ties right now

I'm also thinking stubby rear fender, probably this Thompson seat from Ian @ifitsfreeitsforme

. And these "leather" grips

the fork is bent as you can see in the first pic so I have to deal with that and I've got a couple sets of truss rods to choose from depending on which ones will fit with the least butchery, stay tuned....

Great parts selection, waiting patiently for more. If you have the wood bleach (oxalic acid) going, throw that chain in a separate tub with some, itll free up.

Well I got totally sidetracked from this build, working on a different kind of bike. Got a call from a good friend asking if I knew of a "big" bike her son could race at the gunstock hillclimb, during Laconia bike week. I offered up my old H2 climber, problem is I pushed it in a corner almost 10 years ago with an electrical problem so I've been working on this

the good thing is I have the build off bike " built" in my head, now I've just got to make the parts I want to use play nice together

Back to the task at hand! The steer tube was bent on the fork, a bit of fire and a pipe took care of that

and the Higgins truss rods fit perfect, maybe cuz it's a Murray frame?

the fenders on this bike are really beat and I want a stubby one on this thing so a trip to the band saw and a cut before the worst spot

then a few minutes of dent removal, I bought these dollies at a thrift shop for $3 and I made the hammer in high school shop class

then a trip to the belt sander and I've got a fender

and here's what it looks like on the bike

by the end of the evening I've made a bit of progress, time for some dinner and cartoons

Nice work on the fender! That hammer, reminds me of my flat head screwdriver that I have used regularly for the last 48 yrs since 7th grade metal shop. Tried and true!
