well if it gets into an l.a. roadsters show(NOT THE PREFERRED PARKING AREA!)then its a rat
hey you can call my bikes whatever you want(i often go with p.o.s. )

I haven't said anything about this yet, but I need some verification...

People are upset that DevilWing has gotten so many votes... because it's shiny? And because I didn't weld anything?

I thought that the fact that I created something unique and custom out of parts of many different bicycles, drawing on influence from different styles of bicycles, would make it a legitimate entry in this build-off. I don't have anything on the metal fabricators, I can't weld, so I did the best with the materials and tools that I had at my disposal. If it makes anyone feel better, that chrome frame is actually not as shiny as it seems in photographs, the chrome is pitted in spots and the clear-coat is splotchy and there are a lot of scratches. The frame has some definite wear and tear but is pretty much as I found it, I didn't go and get it re-plated or anything like that.

But I don't have to defend my bike. I am proud of what I built. I put a lot of thought into what I wanted it to look like and spent a lot of time finding the right parts and even more time getting it all to fit together. It is the bike I envisioned, and I am happy with it. Everyone should be proud of what they built, all of the build-off bikes are great. I really didn't expect to get any votes, especially with two other really cool SpaceLiner customs to vote for. I am as suprised as you guys, and I am not trying to ruin the contest for anyone. Just vote for your favorite bikes, don't worry about what other people are voting for. It's supposed to all be for fun anyway, right?

Anyway, sorry for the rant, I just have seen the controversy I have apparently caused and wanted to try and clear the air. Am I missing the point here?

Just look at the participants of the past 2 build offs for a visual reference.

Joey, your bike has so many votes because it's a great looking bike. Plain and simple. Who cares if its a "rat rod" or not anyway? The term rat rod is so loaded these days anyway, especially in the car scene, but now apparently in the bike scene too... There was no such thing as a "rat rod" 50 years ago. Rides were basically either a hot rods or customs. That simple. It's just a label, it's only been in common use for a few years now, and as far as I (and I'm sure most of the others on here) am concerned, it doesn't matter at all. It's not whether the bike is rusty or not, its the overall effect. "Rat" or not, your bike is a work of art, and the fact that it has so many votes is a testament to that. Who cares what label it fits into? Well done, and best of luck!

okay...just to let you know....37 fleetwood and myself were joking around....as for the whats rat and not who cares!(joey you dont need to defend you bike it does the talking for itself and i respect the fact that you created something cool out of what you had  ) theres always going to people who feel bad that there bikes dont get the votes that they think they should....dont sweat them!!!(case in point look at the other build off that was supposed to be for fun *no trophy* and see all the controversy it caused  )
have fun, build bikes you like, and youll always come out on top
and me personally ill build a bike when theres a build off again(if i have the parts).....itll just be in the bike builds thread from now on(because everydays a build off  )

thanks for the replies guys, I realize now that I'd be better off just ignoring all the drama anyway. Again, it's all for fun :). Feel free to delete these posts if you need to, Steve, I wasn't trying to add to the controversy.

Peace

sensor, i think i am with you. everyday is a build off. i am tired of all the nonsence, this is to be fun,now its just bs.i like my build and gee it looks like someone else likes it to. i got a vote. woopie. my buildoffs will be in the bike builds if anybodys interested in it.

Outlaw :D

Man I like the Devilwing... I think its sexy and sleek and everything my bike is not...Is it the bike I would have built? No... Its not where my head is at... Would I like to ride/own it? Hell yeah I would. What about Maximum Overdrive? Or Brass Monkey? Or the Tuxedo? Or how about Long Shot? How much fun would this be if EVERYONE built the same bike? Maybe everyone is not like me, but cool bikes turn me on. They dont have to fit in some box called "Rat Rod" or "Hot Rod" or "Chopper" Its just got to be cool. I know this is Rat Rod Bikes... And I know this is the RAT ROD build off... I get it. And I can say that the only time I really got pissy during any of the build off is when I got "Thats not a Rat Rod" from someone. Is it a Rat? I dont know and I dont care really. I think so but I wouldn't argue the point. But what I do know is that YOU dont have the right to label my creation either. You cant tell me what it is or isnt. All you can tell me is what you think, feel or believe. If you dont think its rat... Ok, no problem.. But just because you think that way doesn't make you the all powerful keeper of the Rat Rod "label" able to issue and revoke as you see fit.
Anyway.... I best stop there

I take that back.... My bike is a rat rod. Because I say it is dang it.

Here is how I define A Rat Rod Bike

Feel free to edit or change how you see fit... After all Im not keeper of the label....

I'll put what I think and if you have a change or addition use the "quote" and make the changes. No fighting, play nice?

Keep it simple.

Rat Rod Bicycle: Slang A Bicycle that has been altered by its owner with the intent of reflecting his/her personality in an apparent, expressive means. Often original finishes/patina's are left including imperfections and rust. Additions such as hand crafted parts and period accessory's also are common. Used as a broad term to categorically identify any unique, interesting or just plain cool bicycle.

I have a 19th century track tandem that has super heavy cogs and block chain... Eccentric nickel plated bottom brackets to adjust the chain so it can have vertical drop outs, collet style self clamping seat posts. It is freakin cool and the fact is 100+ years old makes it even better. I also have a brand new Felt Hot Wheels 68... These two bikes have nothing in common.. Other than they turn me on and make me happy when I play with them. Are they Rats?? Nope... But they do fit the above definition... The same goes for the other 80 or 90 bikes now living in or around my shop. Several Choppers, 20 REAL rat rods, a couple hot rods some track bikes, mountain bikes, downhill bikes.. Is that weird or what?

Ok... I better go to sleep before I make any more "friends" with my rants...

cheers man, I am with you. And I rather enjoy Mad Hammer too, it's one mean machine, and I have been showing everyone I show the build off to that bike and a few others to show how advanced some of the machine work is on some of the bikes (I am a novice compared to you heavy weight metal working guys). I hope to gain some of them skills some day. But I gotta work up to it, the only way I know how :)

Hey Joey, you have NOTHING to explain about your bike! You've seen some of my bikes, the long bike used in the Hartford ride, PhantomBantam. Those are just TWO examples of bikes that I have done hours of metal fabrication. Guess what! I voted for YOU! If I could have voted 50 more times, you would have 50 more votes. You put the RIGHT parts together, and people liked it. I hope you win, you deserve to. You PROVED that you don't have to be a metal fabricator to build a beautiful bike! You also showed us how to be HUMBLE, when people criticize you.................GOOD LUCK!
