man thats where i was going wrong!!! lol...something so simple

When you get good at it, you'll leave just one milimeter of pin protruding on the inside of the chain so when you put it back together, the ends snap together right away and you won't need to hold it in any way to close it back up! Sweetness!

I have the park ct-5. No worries about the pin pushing out, the tool stops at the right point.

mine doesn't stop...the c-clip is gone
now i know (and it took MANY chains to figure out)...
...not to get a chain tool that'll do skip-tooth chains (on the bigger links)
