Re: First Ride in 50+ years: 2 Fer

It was nice catching up with the last two pages of your post. I've been too busy lately. Keep it up. It's enjoyable reading.

I've noticed it looks like you have some nice old craftsman style homes in your area. That style is my favorite.

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: 2 Fer

Wish FIL a HAPPY BIRTHDAY from the RRB gang!

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: 81rst BDay Ride

Thanks for staying tuned Jerry :D
I get OOF now, and I have plenty of them

Hey IIFIFM, Glad you like the posts
Your right, lots of those house types around here, I like them too
One thing nice too is most of those house are somewhat different :D

I like the lanes too Youthgeye, don't always ride between the lines though

Thanks Kingfish! We did tell him and he may have kinda got it...
I haven't process the next "Ride with FIL" volume yet
But I'll get there (and there is now a year's worth of pics  :D )

Thanks Juniorswv and 1WS!

My Wife said FIL was been jazzed up for the ride all week
We loaded up, took off and joined the gang at Boom Island along the Mississippi River
We arrived and people were getting ready
IMG_2614.jpg

And because we were a little late, we were quickly on our way
IMG_2625II.jpg

Was trying to watch FIL at this certain part that is dirt and quick up hill
He lost speed and started almost riding/falling sideways
but gave him a little help with my hand on his shoulder and he pulled it out

Not a bit flustered he was off again :D
IMG_2628.jpg

FIL did well on the cobblestone
More than a few of us were going "Ah-h-h-h" as we rode over them
IMG_2630.jpg

Got to the Stone Arch Bridge and it was so nice up there
IMG_2643.jpg

After I saw my Wife hit my (beater) camera button 3 times, I started to try and help
Of course that's when the pic finally took
IMG_2644.jpg

We all hung out for a while on the bridge enjoying the weather, bikes, and people :D
IMG_2648.jpg

On our way again
IMG_2659.jpg

FIL digging in against the headwind on the Plymouth Ave Bridge
IMG_2674.jpg

Everybody lined up for the contest
IMG_2701.jpg

Asked FIL which bike he wanted to vote for and he choose the nice red and white tandem
I think he finds them interesting but has said he doesn't want to ride one
(And the guy was selling it for $150  )
IMG_2688.jpg

This was classic, My wife with her smart phone addiction
and FIL doing his "shout down Robot" impression
IMG_2729.jpg

My Wife, FIL, and me were going out to dinner then but several people said they were going for pizza
So we asked FIL and he was really excited about it
Unfortunately it just so happened that he got his pizza last
but he ate the whole thing without saying "That's a lot of food" so I think he was kinda hungry
IMG_2731.jpg

Home for the Cake and Ice Cream
Both FIL and me had a quarter of it and as much IC to match
We were both really happy (and finally really full)
IMG_2735.jpg

I think we all of had a great time
I'll post the whole ride soon
Thanks for looking
Steve

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: 81rst BDay Ride

Glad that FIL enjoyed the ride and the cake!
Looks like a great time!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY FIL!

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: 81rst BDay Ride

I wish you'd plan a party for me, people really seem to show up! Love seeing FIL smile.

Also love the way you write your posts, I really feel like I'm there while reading them.

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: Hangin' by the Falls

Think you're right, Dragnusa and Randy
I think the social situations helps him too

Thanks Kingfish, Youthgeye, and Jerry!
I can't take any credit for the crowd for his BDay Youthgeye, I was a happy circumstance
Sounds like my maniacal amount of picture taking is actually working, so you can see what I saw :D

So decided to switch it up a bit this time and head down to Minnehaha Falls
Stopped at the DQ across the street and there was about 2 dozen other bikes there :D
IMG_2757.jpg

Had to take the classic shot in front of the falls
There was practically a loop of people lining up for this angle
IMG_2758.jpg

There were many people at the park since it was such a nice day :D
FIL kept checking out the Italian-made, 4-wheeled rental bikes and the people laughing and riding them
It was really fun and funny to see all the different type of people enjoying them
IMG_2759.jpg

We just hung out and relaxed while listening to the free jazz quartet's music 8)
Lots of people ride to the restaurant "Sea Salt" in the pavilion (no where near an ocean   )
IMG_2760II.jpg

Asked FIL if he wanted to head out (thinking he might be bored) but he wanted to sit a while more
He had a great time people-watching and laughed quite a few times seeing the toddlers doing their crazy antics
Like Randy said, the social situations are good for him, and he happily "worries" about certain thing less often
IMG_2761II.jpg

So we sat for about another 4 or 5 songs then decided to head out
But first I wanted to try a "selfie" and when we got set up, a woman said "Would you like me to do that?"
I said "Sure!" and then she asked if I'd take one of her and her friend too. I was happy to help :D
IMG_2762.jpg

When we were getting on our bikes to head out, FIL says "So we'll head to DQ and then home, right?"
I decided that for what ever reason he said it, I wasn't going to let it spoil the day
So I just said, "We were just at DQ, now we are heading home" :?

Oh well, I think we both had a very good time
and we'll have to go back for more people-watching before the snow flies
Thanks for looking
Steve

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: FIL eats cake

Thanks Luke :D Sometimes it's challenging, but what isn't?

So this post isn't too much about FIL, sorry
We had to take a break because my wife ran Twin Cities Marathon (26.2 miles) last Sunday (Oct6th)

The Plan was for me to ride support
and have my Step Son bring FIL down to the river to see my Wife run past
I guess the text message updates for the runner locations wasn't updating very well
My Step Son and his Girlfriend missed my Wife twice
then decided not to get FIL because he would only miss her running by anyway

So I'll tell a bit of how it went for my wife
It's her first marathon and age 56, she had to train very hard and I'm really proud
She also raised over $1000 for the World Vision charity (clean water for kids!)

With 12,000 other runners to keep her company, I dropped her off at the start
Then headed to the finish line at the State Capitol and park the car
I rode my bike to meet her along the way and eventually ride with her

Predawn riding in ~40F weather, sunny (for a while) but a bit chilly
IMG_2784II.jpg

I tried to meet up with her at Lake Harriet (mile 7) but missed her :?
Lots of people cheering on the runners, they said about 300,000 over the whole course :D
Many people riding bikes to support their runners, yeah!
IMG_2793.jpg

I missed her again at 9 miles
Found her at 13, lost her again at 16, but found her again at 18 :D
The route from then on had a bike path so I stuck with her ( was on the bike for 6 hours)
IMG_2818II.jpg

It was very tough for her mentally and physically, especially in the rain for the last hour
I ran TC marathon at age 35 and it was tough for me
But she made it in at 4hours 46minutes and I'm super proud! :D :D
IMG_2836II.jpg

Later she hobbled down to FIL's house and gave him some of the celebratory pizza and cake
She told him that she how far she ran and he said "REALLY"
So FIL may not have gotten a ride or DQ but he finished off the cake over the next several days, (OOF Jerry  )
IMG_2840II.jpg

FIL and me will be back riding tomorrow (Sunday Oct13)
I have to watch how wet the leaves (that are now dropping) are, after last year's wipeout
Been practicing all summer to not to take shallow angle rides on to the sidewalk
We'll see how long we can go...

You can tell that my Wife has the athleticism and determination of her Dad (FIL)
And I KNOW FIL loved the cake
Thanks for looking
Steve

Forgot a shot I just leaned over and took from the weekend before
Thought it was kinda interesting

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: FIL eats cake

Give your wife an extra foot rub this week! My wife runs, but not up to marathon standards, she is training right now for a 10 mile race, and she calls it training for a half marathon. If I was running 10 miles I'd just go an extra 3, make it a half marathon and call it day. haha

I ran a 5k "with" her a few weekends ago, we got separated before the start (so many people) and I ended up running it alone, she had friends with her. Everyone afterwards was talking about the "next" race and I was like, "I'm done!" As long as I have wheels and pedals, I'm not running anymore.

And FIL got cake.

Re: First Ride in 50+ years: FIL eats cake

Congratulations to your wife on the marathon, that is amazing especially at 56 YO. As some others said I'd have a hard time doing a mile much less a marathon. As always enjoy your pics and stories!!!!!!! Don't always post on them but I do always read them and they always bring a smile to my face.
