It was close but shorter by about 3/4 of an inch. BB is low. but the bike is very BRO, slack like a modern mtb. I wll be off roading with it tomorrow. I can alter the linkage pretty easily if I need to bring up the rear end. New shock hold my weight just fine.

A couple test rides up and down my street made some problems apparent:

1. New shock, while being able to hold my weight made the already low bb too low. I'd be pedal striking on any uneven terrain. I full intend to take the bike off road, so this had to be addressed.

2. I could align the rear triangle but it would list to one side after a quick ride over and over again. I wanted to keep the look but I needed to box in the rear so it would now have so much lateral play.

3. 40 + year old crank bearing race was badly worn and needed replacing right away.

I used some metal struts I had laying around to make the box and push the rear wheel back, thus lifting the bb to a better ride height.

Bearing race was an easy fix, made a big difference in how it pedaled.

Looking at my design, I saw how about 3/8 of mild steel tubing connected to a tab would most likely fail, the welds may hold but the metal around it would break loose. So, I make some reinforcements to eliminate that problem.

Frame geometry is very close to an "electro-forged" era Schwinn cruiser now, an excellent riding bike, Schwinns are.

Tonight, I will be taking out into the hills for a test, we'll see how it hold up.

I wish I had read your post sooner. I remember seeing a 24 inch mono shock on eBay a while back. I wanted to get it but the asking price was to high for me but I was smart enough to get some photos. I know it’s probably to late but here they are. It looks like the bike must have been a 22 inch and bolt on drop out converting it to a 24inch.

That is neat! Looks like an Asian grey market brand like Itoh or some such. I love the early days of BMX because that was where all the interesting innovation and creativity was.

Some action pics. Cranks fell apart but I got it home, need to remove a washer to make it work. We went down a route we call "over the bars" because the first time we did it, 1/2 of us went over the bars. I have never cleaned this trail on a coaster at night before but this bike just glided over things like a dream! It was amazing. I will be making some refinements in the near future.... Enjoy...

I tried the Husky Home Depot brand, they were junk, Velcro stitching came off almost immediately. I'll try those next, knucks are not too pleased that I'm going "au natural".

We have been doing that ride for over 12 years now, it is the oldest BMX ride in LA and the smallest because of its difficulty. I am the only frame builder/bike hacker in our group, but it is no big deal.
