I bought this bike second hand
scaled.php

I've changed the handle bars, pedals and removed the fenders, they're definitely staying off. But I'm unsure about which tyres? and .... to keep or loose the chainguard?
Any opinions or suggestions?

I personally think that chain guard presents a good line and art deco appeal that compliments the tank very well. I echo the truss rod sentiment. Of course I also like the fenders, but see how the "toughness" is increased without them.

I was just in Perth for my first time in April on board the USS Carl Vinson. Maybe you saw the ship? I stayed in Fremo in a rented house with friends. I absolutely loved it there and wish I could have stayed longer!

Thanks for the feedback guys, pretty much 50/50
I like the minimal look hence truss rod and fender removal, I like the black tyres and no chainguard for a minimal look, but I too like how the chainguard balances out the tank.
I really thought the fat franks would look awesome, but when I put them on I was not that much wowed as I thought I'd be I reckon they ad too much colour and take away from the black/red/gold simplicity. (maybe cream tyres and black rims), but I still kind of like them.
A shorter flatter stem did cross my mind.
@ CRASH yep I have seen the USS Carl Vinson and heaps of other US ships, I look after old people and when a big ship comes in we take them for a bus ride to Fremantle to go and have a look. I've travelled quite a bit and I really love Perth, great climate, clean, friendly, open, reasonably flat, lotsa white sandy pristine beaches, if I didn't live my next pick would be Maui Hawaii.
Back to the bike I'm still studying my pics of it I think it's going to be an evolving work in progress.

I grew up in Perth and Freo.

White tyres, chain guard, no truss bars
Bought the bike from Sydney, saw it for sale in gumtree got it sent over by courier. Only one to come into Oz I was told.
Thanks for your suggestion.

A lot of the newer bikes are like this. The design is so well thought out that it's almost impossible to improve on it. Changing out parts, taking stuff on and off, can give it a new, and slightly different look, but it doesn't necessarily make it look better, or cooler than factory stock. I have a Stingray Spoiler, and I've gone through much the same process with it. I found it's easy to make it look different than stock, very difficult to make it look better.

Hi all
Thanks for you suggestions, after various rebuilds and riding it around with and without fenders, chaingaurd, truss rods, black tyres, white tryes etc. My favorite look was this one below. I wasn't keen on the writing on the fat Franks and couldn't work out how to remove it without damaging the tyre. I'll try and keep it this way over our upcoming summer. I am very tempted to get some 24" rims and thick brick tyres :?

Looks good, have you thought about swapping in a bmx (freestyle) stem so you could run the front brake cable through the head tube. Sure would clean up the cables some.
I'd never thought about doing that, good suggestion. I'll google that idea to see where the cables can enter and exit as I haven't seen it before.

Final results of what you did looks "Great" !
I had similar problems with lettering on the G-BOA tires 26 x 3 .45 " creme color.
I was able to remove safely with my hand grinder.
The only problem : the bicycle originally was equipped with 26 x 1.25 tires.
Changing to a larger size tires made the chain about 3-4 links short.
Do you know if using 2 master links the best way or safe ?
Most of the store chains are too small.
Thanks !

That's the seat that came with the bike…comfortable , but it's going to be changed,
not sure which I will choose .
Cheers,

Thanks for pic CCR it looks a lot neater.

I like how white your tyres are. My fat Franks are only about 6 months old and they went yellow/brown fairly quickly I've been told we have one of the highest UV levels over here. Sign makers can only guarantee 10 year vinyl for 7 years over here.

Stole the pic from bmxmuseum, here is what they call a potts mod to run the cable through the stem.

Can you do this on threadless?
You'd have to drill the cap right
Would there be enough space for a cable to pass through the star nut?

yeah you can do it on threadless too, for the traditional star nut set-up, there are star nuts that will take a larger hollow bolt, most modern bmx stems dont allow for it so if it came up with a matching cap you may end up with a mismatched stem cap most times. Lots of the BMX stuff is coming with screw down caps now that actually screw into the fork (actually they come with the forks / not the stems) I havent seen any that will do something like this yet but I'm sure somebody makes something that will work if thats what you need. I think Odyssey made one a while back that would let you do this but I'm not sure.

... kind of fancy for a screw in threadles fork cap but you get the idea
