Re: OCC Stingray gets a second lease on life

More fun while I'm waiting for the paint to cure! So what do you do when you've got a couple of old 7-speed freewheels laying around? You take an air hammer and disassemble them!

Man, look at all those spacers... that gives me an idea!
stingray-020.jpg

Single speed freewheel! I got 20T, 18T, 16T, and 14T interchangeable cogs!!

On the wheel!

Looks like this would clear a 3" tire, eh?

I'm liking this build, Its turning into one of my favorite OCC builds

Much thanks! I can't wait till it's finished, I'm gonna ride it everywhere.

And the fender is too wide for the 24" rear wheel now, so it's going away.

Re: OCC Stingray gets a second lease on life

For those of you who read the backstory on this build, thank you. My wife talked to the friend who we suspect has MS, and she says the specialists are 90% sure she has the disease. I'm attacking it with fervor now, I'm sure I'll be able to raise the money to ride the bike in the MS Tour for Cure in October. I want to ride the Chopper a total of 150 miles when it's all said and done. I'm not trying to break records, just want to be able to make it. I'm starting training rides tomorrow, and will do my very best to be ready for it. The sooner I get the bike done, the sooner I can start putting miles on it, and working the kinks out.

As for the bike, I started cleaning the fork crowns this weekend. I chased all the crown bolts through a die, but I'm still missing one... I might just pick up a whole new set to be on the safe side. I got a confirmation on some items I'm going to sell to fund this build, but t will be 3-4 weeks before I get the money. I may buy the parts now so I can finish it in time, and just recoup the money later.

The frame is done. The bottom bracket is ready to go back in, the headset top cap/race is extremely pitted and rusted... I may just replae that one part so I can slap the fork back together. I'm tossing around the idea of using the MTB rear wheel, re-truing it with zero dish, and using the 7-speed freewheel on it. It's cheap, I have everything needed, but will need a little more work... or I could go with the Sturmey 8-speed rear hub with drum and all the coolness that goes with that. I'm still planning on putting drum front hub on it, and giving it a special lacing pattern... I've never done a non-standard laced wheel before, and this is the perfect time to give it a shot!

I found some padded imitation leather (a kid's detatchable jacket hood, actually... I live in southern Louisiana, no need for it) which I will try to recover the seat with. The original pedals are in great shape, just going to shine them up. Those, and the BB and crank/chainring will go on this week, and I'll order the parts to finish the seatpost, and start work on the wheels. The wheels, by far, will take the most time and work, but it will totally make the difference when it's done. I've never seen a drum front wheel done with a 3-leading, 3-trailing spoke pattern.

I know it's uncool to post updates without pics, but I thought the update for my motivation warranted it. As soon as I get some hardware, you guys will get the whole shebang!

Re: OCC Stingray gets a second lease on life

Here we go, got some new M6 bolts to put the fork back together! They were 2 for $1 at Lowes.

Putting the bolts in.

Frame and fork back together!

Love the red on black...

Here's the 170mm alloy crank I had leftover from a 24" MTB I used to have (and put hundreds of miles on)... I will replace the 32T chainring with a newer one, but otherwise, it's good as-is.

OCC Stingray gets a second lease on life: roller!

Put the bottom bracket in (which was a royal pain) and slapped the temp wheels on it to see how it sits. It's a 24" in the back, and a 26" in front.

The wife says "Those high hanger bars would look stupid." Good thing she's not riding it. :)

looks great! can barely notice it sits higher.i like your idea of a long distance stingray. 8)

Re: OCC Stingray gets a second lease on life

Thanks, Fireproof. I went with some bars that aren't apes, but something that will help, they were only $12 so I had to try them!

I may go with apes later on, who knows... I think they look awesome, but I'm going for comfort first. After the tour, we'll see.

Much thanks, the only other one I've heard of being ridden long distances was converted to a 3-speed using the original rear wheel (Sturmey makes an extra-wide 3-speed hub) and a Schlumpf overdrive planetary 2-speed crank.

Don't bother looking for the Schlumpf cranks, they're about $1500 a pop! I decided I could go to a 3" rear tire and put a Sturmey 8-speed hub with drum brake for $140, hard to beat that!

For what it's worth, I've seen a few Sturmey 8-speed hubs for sale, but http://www.ebikestop.com has the lowest price I could find by a large margin. I even considered getting one of their drum hubs that works with 7-speed freewheels! But they're $75 for one, and I figured after everything, I'd just as soon get the internal gear model. No need to worry about derailer clearance.

Re: OCC Stingray gets a second lease on life

Update: Packages from Big Brown have been showing up on my doorstep... here's the bike with bars, pedals, and the front whitewall installed. Should get the rear tire and seatpost in the next day or two, then I can begin focusing on rebuilding the wheels.

Re: OCC Stingray gets the "Rock yer Face Off" treatment

I have never liked these bikes, and a friend of mine even has one of these frames, which I was not interested in...... until seeing this thread, that is.

Congrats! you've put ANOTHER project into my head.

Much thanks, my good man! I learned how to play the blues harp because of Elwood Blues... maybe one of these days I'll get around to posting up some videos of me playing the blues on the sax, guitar, and harp.

Also, got the Felt ThickBrick whitewall in today, and all I can say is:  WOW! The tire is NICE! Highly recommended thus far, it's a beautiful tire. Cannot wait to get it on the road!

Sadly, since my good camera was broken by my kids, I will have to use my old camera to finish documenting the build... thankfully I have a tripod, it takes horrid pictures otherwise.

Re: OCC Stingray gets the "Rock yer Face Off" treatment

:D Realy enjoying watching how this project is progressing...my 10yr old has just got one.....but he wants it leaving 'as is' for now as he is enjoying riding it so much, we will wait till the winter 8) !

Re: OCC Stingray gets the "Rock yer Face Off" treatment

Put on the grips, the Thick Brick, seat and post, and due to lack of a budget, I'm considering putting a regular 7-speed rear on it. I still need brakes, so if I can find a rear disk/drum hub for cheap, I'll use that. But still, it's not done, here's the latest:
