Spiffy shower in WD-40: hit all the cables, brakes, cracks and crevices

Taking off the crank, that nut was on there pretty good; I had some marvel mystery oil within arm’s length: I gave it a quick splash and wow! Came right off….

Mine was a mountain bike, but otherwise it was a universal Asian bicycle.

Ha-Ha!!!! 100% !!!! I was looking at that kabuki bike and pulling the wheels off and I’m like……. Uh, that looks like the “Schwinn” I’m working on!!!!!!

It's coming along nicely!

I tried using those style brake levers on upright bars before, they never worked well enough to have decent brakes. You're probably going to have to scrounge up a pair of standard levers.

Thanks!!!!!! I’m going to put a closed end of a wrench on there and see if I can bend them out a smidge. We see; I definitely have some levers around here…..

… in case anyone wonders what has gotten into me….

My teenage girls are having a party; dad was sent to the basement to work on bikes!!!!!

Also, I’d like to put a dork disc on this thing. Does anyone know by looking: can I get this thing’s cassette off without a locking tool and a chain whip? I got neither!!!!!!!!

Thanks! -I didn’t. I watched a couple of YouTube videos and the job looks pretty easy. I went 1 step further, and looked to buy the part and a chain whip…. I found what LOOKED like a fit, at a pretty fair price, it included both the lock-nut and the chain whip, but was not 100% sure The nut had the right notches in it to fit properly.

in the end, it’s not a huge job, I just didn’t want to spend the money or wait until next week for a part that may or may not work.

That’s is not the right tool. You need to count the number of splines. My guess is 20 splines and the park FR-4 tool. You also don’t need the chainwhip for a freewheel.

I was packing up my outdoor shop and saw these on my workbench: I’ll dunk them in vinegar and if they clean up good, I’ll just throw them on and not mess with bending the other levers

I made a little progress this week;

I got my brake levers cleaned up and my crank hardware spiffed up.

My seat hardware was also a little crusty, so, scrubbed that up.

The holes in the brake levers are not the same as the existing levers: I may have to swap out the cable housings or do some customization to get the existing housings to work

Got the grips and straight levers on. I’m going to have to do some fancy footwork on the cables to mate to the old levers.

Got the brakes roughed in.

Shortened and cleaned the cable housings

Some drilling and dinking around, but they seem to work ok…. Not necessarily like a Tour bike, but they’ll be fine for cruising around the lake!!!

That reflector is just old school…. I’m going to leave it as-is.
