Found some rustier schwinn bars, ready for 3 inch extensions, plus a couple new items of bling to report. ..mounted a swell Cadet speedo.
And since most of the Schwinn components are gonzo, I popped this cool Firestone badge on :)

Here are a few updates.
Always seem to find something new to add to it...but it is getting close to finished!

Firstly, even though I thought I had the perfect wheels for it (the Elgins), I found these Original paint red drop centers...awesome, since I'd already begun adding some red accents here and there. Had to learn how to rebuild and adjust the dreaded Morrow hub but I've got that dialed in now...

Second, finally decided the rust was rusty enough so it was time to do my last paint details and clear coat. Used the motif from the Cadet speedo on the forks and seat tube..

Lastly, found a bunch more stuff to bolt and glue on. A couple of gauges, some bottle tops for the lights, an old bell with half missing...works and you can see all the gears turn!

Oh yeah, almost forgot the new layback post.
Showing some solidarity for my friends down south...:)

Couple more details, and it'll be wrapped!

That's one Rusty-Crusty Beauty :rockout:.

That thing must weigh a ton, but it would be worth it. Way cool.

This thing has definitely put on some weight since its humble beginnings back at the start of this thread!
Still a sweet rider for the bike club cruises.

Thankfully I have a couple of bikes that have lost a bunch of weight lately and turned into first rate riders...probably post those eventually :)

I'm lovin' it....this brutal beast you built...Mr. Jaypem

so, I'm working on the rust thing with vinegar salt, peroxide and I don't know what else...standing out there with a spray bottle like an idji't. and I live by the ocean and well...almost nothin'....you rusting overnight .? how can this be, one asks? faux like the venerable Mr. Odd Job does it?
I mean, it is a major part of the charm on this build...besides your cool fabrication work..

Ha, thanks dude!
I got some good advice here on the rust thing...it sounds like you are on the right track though.
A couple things, warm/hot metal rusts quicker. When I'm welding stuff that's going to get a rusty finish, I'll have the spray bottle nearby and hit it while its still pretty hot...(not right away though, just steams off)...So, putting parts out in the sun on a hot day helps a lot .
One thing I was told to do but never tried but will next time ;)... Boil your vinegar down for awhile, ups the acidity, and apply straight vinegar first. Your etching the surface for the peroxide to do its thing.

The frustrating part though is that some steel rusts easily and beautifully, and other steel just doesn't seem to want to.
The first rust build I did was a '36 Schwinn and that steel looks amazing rusted and waxed.
This bike has areas that have rusted perfectly, and others not as well.
And the Electra fender I used rusted very spotty. It's why I ended up painting much of it.
Hopefully that helps some, just keep at it.
It takes awhile :)

Good tips, I thank you...

My China built Huffy rusted easily.... Maybe too well.
Washed it and after drying it I wiped it with boiled linseed oil. Looks like rust is taking over!

Ouch!
Forgot to mention, you want to wash thoroughly! Which it sounds like you did..
More linseed?
I had some very active rust areas, which I'll keep an eye on, even after oiling it.
So far so good :)
