Hey folks. Im considering this one frame for the step thru build off. It is an older Murray, from maybe 15 years ago, and is equipped with normal, non folding bead tires. 26x2.125. Found some knobbies I like, with a folding bead. Will folding tires work on older standard original, factory rims that were equipped with standard, non folding tires? I did a forum search and couldn't find an exact answer to that question. Thanks for any help.

I've also got 3 Murray Flight/Spaceliner frames I've been thinking about building; one chrome, one patina teal, and one rusty brown...

Kind Sir!

Would yo upload a front top and additional side view of the tank on this one? Alternatively, if you are not using it, I could give it a good home or possibly rent it from you for a couple weeks...

I can see about getting some good photos of it after this weekend. I'm not ready to part with it yet, but I'd be happy to provide whatever reference photos you need.

They should fit. Folding or non-folding isn't important as long as it's the same diameter. It should say on the sidewall in millimeters what the diameter is. Common size is 559mm. So as long as they match the tires should fit.

Here's a nice explanation from the Sheldon Brown website.

Excellent Information! Having just discovered other Schwinn rims from a package purchase are EA-3 (650-A) opens yet another portal of discovery with (2), tires, yes, you read that right, (2) tire options readily available and the promise of more from Asia. Timely! Another good read for 26" variants: https://societyofthreespeeds.wordpress.com/current-26-x-1-3-8-aka-650a-or-iso-590-tire-offerings/

Thanks man. A few shots to see if it is the same or similar to the tank an a Huffy Eldorado would do the trick, no rush at all.

Well I can already tell you that Murray and Huffy are 2 different manufacturers, so I'm not sure this tank would fit on a Huffy. That said, a lot of parts are surprisingly interchangeable despite being made by different manufacturers, so I don't know. The only real way to know if it'll work is to get a tank and try it out.

This is how far I made it last year in the mbbo. If Iā€™m unable to disassemble and then complete the build, I may want it moved to just a build journal if possible. It needs tons of work and sits in this state. Needs a new hub set up and some mild additions and changes View attachment 277464

Thanks so much, Pondo. That's exactly what I wanted to know.

After much research, analysis, and varying opinions we have decided to change things up a bit and add a new class to the mix. See how things go and also keep the content fresh

With much excitement we would like to unveil that for the final build off of 2024 we will be rolling out the STBO (step thru build off) for all you drop tube fans! As long as it is a traditional step thru or ladies bike. Factory built or from scratch. On road, off road, whatever. No restrictions other than the frame design having that traditional dropped tube to clear your ladies dress or vicker robe :21:

***** These rules are a work in progress and not official (6/17/24)
***** We reserve the right to amend them prior to competition and posting them in their final form

STBO - STEP THRU BUILD OFF
  • Frame must be a "traditional" step thru (commonly referred to as a ladies frame) in the end configuration (no gender benders to high bar/male)
    • Final say in eligibility will be handled by staff
  • Anything else goes
    • From the factory or scratch built

MBBO - MUSCLE BIKE BUILD OFF
  • Must meet at least 2 of the following 3 criteria to be considered a Muscle Bike

  • Rear tire larger than the front. (Wider or taller or both)
  • Banana /Polo seat
  • Muscle bike appropriate bars.(Apehangers, Butterfly, Rams Horns, steering wheels, or any other weird variants, etc)
***** Other standard rules will apply

Jan-Mar : build-off - ORBO & SWBO

Apr : off

May-July : annual RRBBO - class 1/class 2

Aug : off

Sept-Nov : build-off - MBBO & STBO

Dec : off
Does it have to be a step thru when itā€™s done?
Or just when it starts life
