Early 70's AMF. Araya rims are the best part, the originals probably didn't make it past the mid 70's.

I get bikes that have been worked over by clueless owners. This one looks like it got attacked with a hammer and chisel. Trying to remove the bb. The bearings were chunky. Left end of the bb axle smashed over and useless. This is the left side cartridge ring. My bet is the former owner never saw a bicycle tool of any sort. Just hammers and vise grips.

Rear derailleur torn off. Direct chain so tight the drive train won't move. Both pedals garbage. Walmart handelbars.
Dismanteled, most parts binned. The frame is okay so it could be a rebuilder. At least they didn't saw off the brake mounts.

The source says I should hire him to fix bikes. Hummm, No.

Gary Fisher Advance mountain bike.

Bike dismantled. Some parts tossed. Seat, pedals, cables, rear der bit, broken cage, extremely worn chain.

One oddity is matching rims but mismatched hubs. Both wheels were probably from different Treks. Both wheels had been converted to bolt on axles with the lock nuts loose. One rear cone was completely destroyed.

This is the front hub. Looks like it had at least 11 balls on one side that destroyed the cup in the hub. With too many balls, they stack up on each other and lock in place. I counted 11 divots in the cup but there could have been more that didn't make contact.

picked up 9 bike and a unicycle yesterday.

The most interesting bike (to me) was the Motiv MonoRail. Early bmx with a single tube frame.
The donors husband worked at a Huffy factory for a year or so. Ponco City, Oklahoma. His boring job was cleaning the paint booths at night. 1 booth each night, over and over. I never knew there was a Huffy factory in Oklahoma.
The donor said she bought all these new for the kids (some 40 years ago?)

One has some identity confusion. The Kent little boys bike. Is it a gun or a race car? Fire power or Pole Position?

The one Huffy has a Schwinn banana seat and Schwinn grips on Wald high rise bars.

All got a brooming to rid much of the barn dirt.

Would you be interested in selling that Monorail? I had one as a kid that I bought new at BJ's in the 90's.
 
1991 Fuji Saratoga in Rainbow Blue.
A bit beat up. Too bad the frame is bent (front end impact). Going to make it rideable for 1 ride then part it out. A bit nicer than your average Fuji. Billed as a touring model.

I gave the Fuji Saratoga a tune up today and took it for a 44 mile ride.
Rear der is bent and the hanger was very bent. I had to run a tap through it several times before the tool would fit. Shifts well now. Rides smooth with the fat Continental 5000 tires.
Pealed off about 10 feet of black e tape, the remnants of a bike computer and some zip ties. Leveled off the seat and lowered it a bit. The stem was in the fork about 3/4" inch. Yikes. Rotated the bars up. First impression. Owie!. 21" frame with a 32" stand over! The bb is about 11.5" up from the ground which is pretty high. That's a good idea for mountain bikes when riding over logs but surely not needed on a touring bike. The initial ride was a bit squirrely due to the bent frame. The top tube is bent and has some ripples under it. The down tube is missing a couple square inchs of paint where it flexed off. Too bad. It's getting cut up tomorrow.
Trek Multitrack or 520 wheels. 3x7. The brakes are messed up. Someone put some Shimano Alivio mtb cantis on there with the wrong stradles. Shimano made those fixed length stradles in several lengths and these are way too long. The more you squeeze the brake lever the less brake power you get. These are so long, braking is trying to pull the brake arms up, not in towards the rim.

Very nice Trek Wasabi. MSRP $330 offered in 2008-2010. Needs more appropriate bars and some grips. 24" cruiser.

Mongoose Fling with some interesting wheels. Left out side for years so the wheels look like chrome plated plastic that lost the chrome layer.

A fresh find, 11 years ago.
Completely unrideable so it was scraped out then.
head tube about 28 degrees, trail around 16 inches.
Turning the handle bars mostly just leans the front wheel, not change it's direction.

3 Murray Squirt bikes today.
A couple of the wheels are shot but I have access to period replacements.
The guy I got them from worked at a local grocery store chain where they were promo bikes. He said they had been in his garage since new, about 10 years ago. More like 40 years. made in USA Murrays. Very RED. A Bit washed out in the photo. Need reassembly and tuning up. They would make for good coaster brake conversions. Get rid of those feeble steel side pull brakes and friction thumb shifters.

Huffy Nel Lusso, (Italian for "In Luxury") mens, black. 2016. All of the Nel Lusso that I've had/seen were ladies versions in easter colors. Chainring was bent over about 45 degrees so that got replaced. A short ride to check the river flooding level.

Starry. Another name I've never seen before. Looks like a victim of home assembly. Coaster brake arm bolt missing, 2/3's of the chain guard fell off. Front brake cable routing? And who puts fenders on like that. Another lousy combo of rim brakes on painted rims. Hey stop that. ..... manufacturers.

6272136 - 6221243 = 50,893 bikes
1486 - 1016 = 47 days
assuming 5 day work weeks
50,893/34 days = 1496 bikes per day.

In looking through hundreds of Giant built Schwinn numbers, most are 7 digits.
Giant often put a separate date code on the frame Gmmyy, usually on a dropout.
The last digit of the date code matches the first digit of the serial number.

The bulk of Schwinns made by Giant were the World, World Sport and World Tourist. Other modes include the Traveler, Sprint, Sierra, Mirada, Mesa Runner. Giant was a huge supplier of lower priced Schwinns from 1983 to 1986 or so.

Schwinn bikes have about 20 different serial number schemes, depending on age, model and where the bikes were made.

This is June, the traditional wedding month so that might explain the many his/hers pairs.

All Pro (Kmart brand name) 10-speed. 26" wheels. As bad as many cheap Chinese imports are, this is just as bad as any of them. Real slugs to ride. Only useable for a garden bike or metal recycling.

Huffy Frozen . one of a billion branded kids bikes. It's nice to see the makers offer up so many graphics on the seats but they use such cheap plastic seat covers so they don't hold up for even a couple years. No training wheels as usual. Includes a baby doll seat on the handlebars. Not a good roll model. Teaches some little girl it will be okay to ride her own future children on the handle bars. Splat.

Nishiki Bravo. 14" frame with 26" wheels. Works for kids that normally should be on 24" wheel bikes. That rack is something odd. Ready for an jungle expedition.

Sekai GT Deluxe 2700. Donor said he got in it 1980 but the serial suggests it's a 1977 build. Note the lack of top tube cable stops and no water bottle bosses. Suntour Cyclone rear der.
