I know you’re pretty stuck on grips right now (no pun intended?) but bar tape would look really cool on that bar. That bar was made in the early 90s and I remember someone made grips just for that bar that were long enough to cover from the controls to the ends. I never had a set of those and I don’t remember what grips I used. I wonder if the bar diameter is a little undersized.

I’m worried about shock absorption. It’s a school bike, so I want it to be comfortable. I’m not against full tape, but I’d really like to exhaust my grip option first.

Automotive 3M super weather strip adhesive. (Yellow)

The directions for best adhesion, coat the metal and the rubber. Let set for a couple minutes then apply. They are talking about applying a rubber gasket. If you do this, you probably will not get the grip all the way on.

I would add adhesive to closed end of the grip, then adhesive 1/2 the length of the grip up the bar end. Push it on and adjust it quickly. It will take a little time to set because the air cannot get to it.

They make some pretty cushy comfy bar tapes these days. It might be nice to have the bar covered all the way to the end too. The small bar end plug would need to be figured out.

60’s right now. Down to mid 40’s at night.

Definitely not that then here when it gets cold the grips don't grip right because well everything is cold

I've done some thinking and I'm just going to go with this option. I'll return the grips on Tuesday and trade up for some cushy bar tape. I already bought some tape, but it's crap because I went cheap. I'll get something cushy, like Cinelli gel cork tape. And yeah, I've got to figure out the bar end problem.

I’ve been wanting to try that Cinelli bar tape, just need the right project to put it on.

I would think you should be able to find a bar end plug solution at the hardware store. Maybe a plastic or stainless cap designed for tubing.

Shifter and brakes came in. While dialing in the shifting I found the chain was too short and the chain line was off.

So I added a link to the chain. And I flipped the sprocket from here…

So shifting is dialed in. I installed the brakes, they’re set, but the cheap pads are making noise. Pondo recommended Kool Stop salmon pads, so put 4 on order.

Meanwhile… I cleaned up the bar and grips and installed them again… didn’t stick, so I got this…

We’ll see how that goes. It’s curing.

I wrapped the bar ends, but they taper down and I can’t find a plug to fit. Anyone have a good suggestion?

16 gauge shotgun brass or sparkling wine corks.

Got tape that was squishy and grippy, but they didn’t have black so I got green.

This tape also had small bar ends, but as you can see, not near small enough.

Even a cork is too big!

I think I saw rubber stoppers at the hardware store, so I’m going to recheck for something small enough. This is getting upsetting.

This is killing me. The silicon glue didn’t work. Didn’t stick at all. So I figured the Coke Bottles were too loose. The $10 glue was a waste, so why not throw another $15 at it. Got new grips at the LBS, which looked like the ID was smaller. So, cleaned the bars again. Used hair spray to install again. Let it set for a couple hours to set…

Crash, sorry I am late to the party, but health issues have dramatically kept me offline...I haven't checked email in over a month.....

Regarding handlebar grips, a few months back I posted a response about using women's hairspray. I (and others) have used Aquanet for a long time with great success. @MattiThundrrr stated he has used the non-aerosol type but I am not sure if he was serious or not. I use the aerosol version.


You gotta be fast when doing this, similar to gluing PVC together. Inside of grip needs to be clean and dry, same for the bar. Spray liberal amounts in the grip and on the bar until it is dripping off.....then Don't Hesitate. Grab that grip and drive/slide it into position: don't stop (if you can help it.). You will have a few seconds for final adjustment and to align the ridges on the grip to make them straight (if it has ridges). Once they are in position give it a minute or so to dry. A year from now if you want to change/remove grips. you have to cut them off with a knife or razor blade.

I stumbled across this possible solution at work this morning. We use these to plug threaded holes before a part is painted. They are rubber. I grabbed 2 sizes. If it works, I can cut off the “handle” and just hammer them in. I’ll try them out.

Could try a modified version like this. Find a smaller rubber hose that’ll fit your ID and run a 1/4-20 bolt thru it. As you tighten the nut it’ll expand the piece of hose
