While checking alignment of the guard, I could tell that it was hitting the tire. This is preventing me from lining up both the front and rear bracket. Gonna have to cut and grind a tire groove in both the top and bottom of th guard first. It's a bit late to disturb the neighbors. Everything in our courtyard echos to our neighbors courtyards over the short brick walls.
My plan for the back is to have an angled bracket under the front dropout extension bolt.
Then up front, I'll trim the bottom of the unfolded stock bracket and make a new bracket that wraps the downtube and sticks straight up to be bolted together with the flattened stock bracket
Got the tire notches cut on the guard.
Good enough for working on the braces. I'll probably notch it out longer by the end of this.

Gonna try and get this guard mounted today. You can see that Queenfish has decorated the courtyard for the 4th if July. We even have a little nekkid Uncle Sam.
Quick start on the brace mockups using simple roof flashing. I swear by this style vise for multiple bike projects.
Got the general shape and size for the front bracket. Now I have the game of tweaking the X Y and Z axis of the guard to clear not only the top of the chain (done) but also the crankarm parts, the face of the chainring and the rear section. Also have to make sure it flows with the lines of frame and build in the end. Good first pass.

Filed out some more height adjustment. This gets me close enough to a template that I can use to make the real brackets from my trusty rollaway bed spring steel. The flashing worked great for the general mockups. Of course it has a lot of flex to it, so I had to compensate with my trusty foil duct tape. I also was able to get a starting point feel for the rear bracket.

Thanks, I like that idea. I also like the length and was planning to even test mockup some taillight or spearpoint there.
I have a vise just like that green wood worker's bench vise. Made to be bolted to the side of the workbench. That way it is clear of wood moved around on the bench.
Looks like I've been using this rollaway bed spring steel for 10 years now. It first appeared in my starsNbars build thread for BONINE.
I've used this stuff on most of my builds since then. It's stiff and strong, but not too hard to cut and shape.
