After it was functional I went for a spin down to the lake. It's actually really cool to ride. It just needs fairly level terrain at the moment. The brakes need improvement and the gearing is still too high for the hills around here. But for mellow cruising it’s a kick. The shifter works good and it’s easy to use.

When I got back I mocked up the sheet metal. I really would like to use the Shelby chain guard. It just looks right on here.

I think I’m going to save the Monarch fenders for a stretch project. A bobbed rear fender might be the ticket. This one is for a 24” bike but I have others that would fit. If I can wrap this up later this week I can get back to my class 2 build.

Great looking rat!
I like the Shelby guard on as well.
You may want to redo the cable routing though. I'm guessing it's for testing purposes, but it will look better hidden along the frame lines
Monark fenders are always cool, but this build looks great without them too.

If you look at how the cable has to exit the shift lever, where it is presently mounted, it couldn't follow that seat stay. The first bend would be too extreme, and it would still have to loop below the stay to function.

@Pondo, if you could run the shifter off the seat tube, you could curl the cable back up slightly to the seat stay and follow that down to the derailleur.

I wasn't suggesting the the cabling run along the seatstay, but if the shifter stays in it's current location the cabling could run down the seattube farther and make it's sweeping curve hidden by the chainguard and run along the chainstay back to the derailleur.

If the shifter position is changed, then other options open up too..

That fender works well. Bare metal would be cool.

I mounted the stem shifter from the 10 speed to the seat stay with a shim. Looks kind of cool there. Should work ok.

All set. The crank action hasn’t been this nice on this bike in probably decades.

Ah, Falcon derailleur and lever, I have an identical set of those on one of my Romets, built here in Poland during the Communist era.

Cool. I think these came off of a Free Spirit step thru, but it could have been a Kia. They seem to work pretty well. I will put lower gears on the back eventually which may need a different derailleur.

I like the pink.
I think it’s kind of cool too but I think bare metal may work better on this build.

I think the chain guard should also be bare metal along with the fender and almost match up with the shiny part of the tank.
Nice! I hadn't considered that. I like it. I'm going to have to ponder it. I'd like to keep some white on the chain guard to tie in with the accents too. Thanks!

That's a better idea leaving some white. The bottom portion left white would probably work well.

I'm thinking maybe remove the white on the raised portions, leaving rusty patches where possible, and leave the white in the depressions.

Sounds like a good plan

After I painted Stacey’s Mom I still had time for a little Doomage. I took the stripper wheel to the chain guard and removed the white paint from the raised sections, keeping some of the rust spots. It came out pretty well and looks good with the chrome on the tank and also the white accents. Thanks @Wildcat for the ideas.

Next I trimmed down the fender to fit, removed the mounting bracket as it was in the wrong place then stripped the paint.
