Here's a fun little jeep wrecker I built next to a nice Tonka Camper that I was thinking of modding but then checked the value of... I do have a couple of big yellow dump trucks I could lobotomize. We'll see, I've got a couple other Tonka ideas...

The idea behind a build off is that everyone competing builds at the same time. So as awesome as that truck is, it isn't eligible unless you're planning on blowing it apart and kitbashing it into something new.

Got my Weird oHs 'Huey's Hut Rod' kit in the mail this past week. Ideas starting to formulate, gathering supplies.
My '50 Chevy truck and the Weird oHs kit are different scale, which adds to the 'Rat Fink' kind of look that was so popular back when I was a kid building models in the '60s. Now I'm just a kid in my '60s , trying to carry on that spirit.

Now let's see what everyone else has up their sleeve! And as always....

Basing it on the Voyages of Sloth and Good Boy books I'm working on. Making the giant sloth figure might be good experience to make a (larger) articulated action figure version.

Got some work in on the 1H4F build on day one of the build challenge. Paint is always one of my favorite parts of a build, be it bikes or model kits, so I dove right in. This will be a RaT-ification style RusT-ified OJ build, so first I laid down some primer, then a light coat of Rustoleum Cinnamon and some Dark Taupe for an under coat.

That's it for Day 1. More fun to come! We are heading up to close up our campsite today, so I'll be basking in what might be the last warm weekend of 2021, highs near 60 degrees F and pure sun. Later!

1 On the Hole 4 On the Floor

Trying to increase some participation here by keeping the thread re-freshed! Some more progress made on my build today. In between some Fall chores and a bike ride, I added some more paint and RaT-ina to the '50 Chevy truck. I used my 'mustard' technique that I used on my bike build Trans - Mig - RaT a couple years back. Spray a few spots of Cinnamon and Dark Taupe where you want rust to be. Cover those spots with mustard so that will wash off with the top coat after it's applied and reveal the 'surreal rust'.

Also gleaned my wheels I got with the little toy 'monster car' to be ready to add to the '50 Chevy for a lifted rat monster truck of my own.

I also added a little acrylic paint to the Rust / Oxide Mat Testors color to create a browner tone for the rust.

The pictures will take it from here....

Flat Black spray paint on the wheels after I removed them.

And a quick mock up of the proposed position of said wheels and tires on the '50 Chev...

Now let's see some more of those Rat / Rod Model Kit Bash II entries!!

Just a fast update on what I'm building...
Steel 58-59 Ford Tonka pickup body is on the way. I'm still acquiring a chassis. I've got some old erector set parts on hand and various bits of steampunk styled doodads. I didn't see anything about the "Driver" in the rules but come on, we gotta have that so...

My initial intention last year @GuitarlCarl , was that in the 'Bash' of the kits, one would be a Weird oHs kit, or a Rat Fink style kit, where there is always a character involved. Almost all of our build entries last year had 'drivers' as a result.

Can't wait to see your Tonka bash take shape! We had only two or three Tonka trucks / implements in our sandbox and they were always the first to be chosen.

In an effort to maintain momentum and perhaps attract some more builders, I will continue to post updates on my 1OH4OF build. I'm also possibly going to change the name as well, so stay tuned!

I bought the little Monster Truck toy at Goodwill for $1.29, and was really pleased to find just what I wanted for wheels and tires to turn my '50 Chev pick up into a bonified ratified monster truck. I also found after a couple attempts at mounting the wheels, that I needed to use the 'suspension' pieces of the toy as well. Trying to 'lift' my spirits, as it were.

Hacksaw and box cutter were my friends to slice and dice up the toy car to get what I needed.

As you can see, I ran a screw through the 'suspension' piece, and into the axle hole on the '50 Chev chassis. Then mounted the axle and wheel / tire from the toy through it's original axle hole.

Pretty happy with the stance. I also inserted the 'glass' in the cab, and then sprayed the whole truck (minus the tire / wheels) with a Matte Clear to tone down any shiny that might be left. It actually looks duller in person, the overhead florescent lights add the glare.

A 58-59 Tonka pickup cab the same size cab as the red camper posted earlier.

I'm definitely going to change the name of this build. Nothing is striking me at the moment. I am wide open to suggestions / ideas!

So, part one of this kit bash is done. The lifted monster '50 Chevy pick up is ready for part 2!

Enter, 'Huey's Hut Rod', a Hawk model kit in the Weird oHs series from back in the day. I didn't have this one in my collection as a kid, so I'm stoked now to build it and 'bash' it together with the '50 Chev. One of the most fun parts about these models was the advertising they did for the kits. Here's an ad from a magazine in the '60s....

And the 'instruction sheet' that came in my Hut Rod kit is funny, and a catchy way to instruct a kid on how the model should go together....

It was like getting a comic book and a model kit all in one! So, of course I followed the directions *cough cough* and went straight to building the outhouse aka Huey's 'Hut'. It went together pretty simply. Then I wanted an aged look to the wood and shingles, so I got together some of my best friends, and we turned it into a reclaimed wood look with a bit of fungus and algae build up on the wood shake shingles.

And then I grabbed a couple of Rustoleum spray cans, a small brush, and a couple of tubes of acrylic paint and went to work on the 'advanced aging process'.

One last thing was to see how it looked as the 'topper' to my lifted '50 Chev....

I think it's looking pretty biffy, er, spiffy.
