Re: The Rot-Rad Coupe (Chainguard Poll - pg 3)

1 and 5. i wouldn't mind those for a couple of my own projects.

Re: The Rot-Rad Coupe

It looks like number five is the favorite. I wasn't able to get #5 exactly, but here is what I did get. Its not quite as cool as #5 but its cool in its own right. Its suppose to have came from a Monark.

I tore the bike down to the bare bones and cut off all the tabs for the old chain guard as well as the cable guide tabs. The kick stand is gone now too. In its place will be a NOS Wald prewar unit bolted to the rear hub. I started stripping the paint and getting my hardware list going.... Then duty called and I had to leave it hanging and leave for work for a week in the Bay Area. I felt like I was on a roll too. The big brown truck has been to my house every day for a week dropping off parts. Oh well, all I can do is think about it for now. I've changed my mind on it about twelve times. At least there's no right way to do it, and however it comes together, when it comes together, It'll be how I want it to be at that time.

Heres the kick stand.

I feel I should chime in on the stem issue. Yes, those kind of stems are ugly, and I wouldn't put it on like that. however, that is the exact same stem as seen here:

it has a threaded bullet plug, soldered in (the bolt comes up from underneath), and then chopped off and welded right to the bar. There may also be other ways you could pretty up a part like that.

Re: The Rot-Rad Coupe

The whole stem issue has go me stumped. I'm gonna end up with for or five different styles. I'll put each one on, take a picture and post them here. I have a decent prewar neck coming in the mail now too. I might even try an old school BMX neck...

Alyhough I came across very well executed beatification examples of that said stem, this bullet-thingy is the best! Looks cool now. I'm stll trying to figure out how he made this work though... But I saw stock stems like these and they were just color-coded, and looking good. There was at least one in this years build-off...

Re: The Rot-Rad Coupe

I finally got some time to tinker with this thing.
I realized that with the kick stand I want to use, and the Bendix coaster brake arm, there might be some clearance issues between the two. To get the hub to sit correct in the drop outs, I had to use spacers on the coaster hub to make up the space that was left due to this bike originally having a five speed multiple sprocket hub. Then I made a bracket that anchors both the coaster arm and the kick stand. It all seems like it will work out OK. I still need to get a couple spacers for the two bolts that anchor the kick stand.

Re: Rot-Rad

Almost a year to the day I finally put this thing together. Well it hung in my buddies paint shop for about seven months until he painted it for me. Then once the frame and springer pieces were pained, I got onto building a bike for my lady: see Satcy's Savage :D. Once I saw her riding her new cruiser, I got real motivated to put this one together. I borrowed the rims and headlight off another bike I did. They're cheap aluminum rims with a Shimano coaster. The handle bars, stem, and rear "domed" axle nuts came from the Savave. The solid sprocket is Hutch while the crank and pedals are Schwinn. The B72 Brooks is a sweet comfortable seat I must say, and it looks cool too!! The next step for this bike is a taillight, full rear fender, a Colson chain guard, and a Monark cheese grater rear rack. I have the chain guard and rack... Need to find a cool rear fender, maybe a peaked fender or something. Any ideas..??

Heres a mock up of the cheese grater rear rack. Looks great on this canti frame. Thats Stacy's wheel in there..
