Spent some time after work in the cool of the early AM, seeing about getting the fork mounted....the PAU OPER having a very short head tube and the fork was meant for longer.
I knew this typical, random, generic, late-model, girl's MTB frame...did I mention cheap..was sitting behind the garage for six years for some reason.
R.I.P.
Using hose-clamps (automotive), hack-saw,vice, grinder, buffer, stationary sander, I cut it to the length I need and got it really pretty square!
I'll squirt some white paint over the purple and it'll look like it's meant to be there.
The lower washer and the adjuster have a lip that holds it all straight.
Feels good...I think it's gonna work!
After looking at the pics, I may want to figure a way to shield the upper bearing a bit more.
The threads don't go down that low, though.
Whatever.
I feel like I've cleared an important hurdle.

That is one hillbilly piece of engineering! And I definitely mean that in the best way. You gotta let me know how that works out for you. I've never seen that done, and since welding isn't an option here, it seems like that might actually work pretty well!

Wow! I wouldn't do any curb hops but for flat out cruising it probably will work.

I've been thinking about this setup all morning. Did you try mounting that extension on the underside of the steering tube? It would rake the bike out a little bit, which is always cool, and I think there might be less stress on it from the springer if its on the bottom? Just a thought.

I thought about trying it at the bottom too.
Just didn't seem right.
I realy don't feel like it's going to bind or have any weird stress problems.
The piece I made is just acting like a lengthened adjuster nut...I think....hyuck!
We'll see how it goes.
PS: there'll be no wheelies.,,on this bike :lol:
The fork doesn't have the safety washer holes and I'd be more worried about the wheel falling off or something.
This whole bike is going to weigh a ton.
Just cruising........ok, maybe one wheely, but no bunny-hops.

Too cool to cut...in my opinion.
It would also need to have threads cut for several inches and somehow put slot down the side of it....and the uppper supports would then need cutting and threading.
If it doesn't work out....which I think it will...I'll just find another frame for the fork.

A similar thing was done to it when I got it.
Notice the three washers.
They have a perfect inner lip that fits in the new purple chunk perfectly.
I used one above a non-threaded, bearing cone.
The late-model fork has much longer threads than the springer, so they were able to use an adjuster right on top of the bearing....which crumbled with rust when I took it apart.
New parts tomorrow?

I need this stem/goose-neck off this donor bike, but not the bars and I didn't want to destroy the nice old white grips.
Saw somewhere on the interwebs that using compressed air they would come right off.
Took the bars and my old rubber tipped air gun and used the air at work.
Put the air in one grip hole and your thumb on the other and POP!
What a rush!

So I guess this means that the wheelies are on! 8)

It looks good. maybe you could try to mount some lights or wings to that spacer tube to make it look like it belongs there.

Hey, I'm glad the spray worked out for you.
I used my better respirator, but the spray doesn't produce a lot of mist....goes on very wet.
Definitely don't want to be breathing that stuff.
It worked very well and presented no problems when I went to paint.
I have stuff to report, but not a lot of progress has been made.
I'm still waiting for my bars and tires...I have a parts Jones on.
Now it's the 4th and then the weekend....maybe Monday, maybe tomorrow, who knows.

I spent part of today making a wrench for my forks.
I went to a bike shop today for some proper tools and had a bit of sticker shock.
They didn't have a 19mm anyways.
So I hit a pawn shop on the way home and bought a chinese 19mm for fitty cents and took it to the grinder.
Perfect!
It will be needed for my hub rebuild too.
The tires shown are the ones that came with the bike.
All buttoned up...feels very solid (un-lubed bearings).
The springer feels neat.
Can't wait to roll it.
I don't think it looks too terrible, ej599.....wings maybe!
There's a provision for a head light on the fork, between the springs.
I've found out some juicy details (sorta juicy) about the history and make of PAU OPER.
