Try to recover a stolen bike? Go to jail!

I always use my digital camera to take photos of any modifications I do to my bikes along with the serial numbers. It helps to have a good photo when dealing with the cops... We had probably one of the worst bike thieves in North America arrested in Toronto last year and as far as I know...

lets see those old school / custom shifters.

Here is my 4 speed suicide shifter, still a work in progress: I broke the original Nexus 4 speed and couldn't find a replacement anywhere so I had to build one. The lever is made from an old Ikea shelf-unit brace with a ceramic insulator on the end. It attaches to the chain guard tab and...

    Trek District

I believe that the belt is made by the same company that manufactures Harley drive belts so you probably won't need a spare. Spot bikes uses the same belts and they're almost indestructible :)

What is the advantage of a fixed gear?

Here are some pics of the setup I have on mine right now. I have a flip-flop rear hub so that I can use both a fixed cog and a single speed freewheel: 16 tooth bmx freewheel 16 tooth fixed cog I am riding freewheel right now as there is just too many potholes/construction/suicidal...

What is the advantage of a fixed gear?

I've had knee problems all my life since I did track & field in school (not getting any better since I hit my 40's) and I don't have any issues stopping a fixie. The secret is to have the seat post long enough that your leg is almost fully extended at the bottom of the stroke. If you had a...

    The Galtbacken 18

Another amazing bike build and very well documented. I have been putting off learning how to weld for years now but after watching your builds, I am going to buy some equipment and start my own projects. You are a great influence on anyone wanting to get into frame building. Cheers!

    Bad economy, bad people?

On the Toronto Craigslist you are looking at a minimum of $120 for any complete bike, regardless of age. If you mention 'Classic' or 'Vintage' then you are looking to pay at least $200... If I saw $30 for any decent bike I would jump at it in a second, no questions asked :)...

    T Project by Tomasini

Very cool looking bike, love the suicide shifter. Is the shifter indexed at all or is it just friction? I'm trying to build a similar setup for my nexus 4.

    Shipping to Canada

Not to mention that we pay import duty on anything coming into Canada over C$20... I got hit with a $40 brokerage fee on a Schwinn headbadge that had US$21 on the customs label (the sender had added the $8 shipping cost onto the form). I shipped a US$1500 mountain bike from Toronto to San Fran...

    LBS rant..

I have a couple of great LBS in Toronto that I go to regularly but they are all a decent 45 min ride from my house. Great parts and service but a real pain when you're trying to pick up a part for a quick fix. I was looking for a roller brake for a nexus hub I am fixing up for a friend so I...

    Sting-Rat!

The story behind this makes it one of the best Stingrays I've ever seen! Great job! Love the chain guard.
