I like the extra weight up front. Did you consider how it might effect your light?

I assume you mean visual weight and I hadn't thought about it that way, but you are right. It does add a bit more visual balance. The contrast of old bike / new fork holds up fine, but I just like the idea of giving the Girvin more of an old bike vibe.

It wouldn't be right to use that big light with the beehive. That light is a bit of a beast and I have been struggling with the adding braces that aren't too bulky. I love the look of the light, but I think I would rather have the beehive if I make it flow. I have smaller lights that may work fine. I also have the light bracket from the Higgins fork. I even tested my Wester Flyer Super headlight on it. I don't think this is the right light though. I also don't think I would have the beehive fender bracket extend as far as I had it in this photo.
I may not even use a light.

Great build! I really dig this bike.

Thanks moodster. Glad to see you back on the boards. Are you planning on jumping into the build off?

My latest starsNbars experiment is a Beehive Girvin. I was sitting in my office and I noticed the Higgins Beehive that I got from @Wildcat .

My mind start thinking what it might look like if I used the Beehive and it's arms as a faux springer on front of the Girvin. Brought it home and took it apart and did some test mockups. I'm not planning on putting a fender on here, but I could cut the front section of a fender to use as the springer base and make it look like a Higgins base. I have a good idea how to attach the upper stabilizer arm of the beehive so that it won't interfere with the opperation of the girvin. I would probably also have standoffs coming out from the brake bosses. I'm still very fuzzy on how I would connect the ends of the springer arms down near the ends of the forks. Maybe some faux rocker arms. Not sure.

KF,

That looks great; it's a keeper. Dig the front fender.

Thanks man. We'll see how it works out. I'm not putting a full fender on the front though. Just planning on using a very small section as beehive base similar to the Higgins fork.

KF, no- maybe next year. I just bought a 57 schwinn, and am just going to be crusin for a while. Still have my parts stash for my roach and I may just do a quickie build on it. Probelm is my full time job, home repairs, and 3 project cars.By the way- the build off bikes get better every year, the imagination and implementation of new ideas is impresive!

Just had fun flow of thought session in my shop. Luke recently posted a link to Der Rod Baron from BO6 and I saw where @gowjobs used some bike chain to secure his coaster brake arm. I had been wanting a different way to secure my front drum brake, so I went out to the shop to experiment. As I started playing around I though it might be cool to wrap the entire fork in chains

Then I thought maybe make horizontal stripes for the fork
View attachment 3598

From there I thought, "what if I did my vertical stripes in rusty chain?"

Which was followed by, "What about the stars on the upper legs?"

So maybe something like this with three stars up top and four stripes below.

Yes, yes, and yell yes.

I keep thinking that you could engineer a mount and rockers that would actually make it function. With short rockers, it wouldn't have to move much. That would be wild to have a double suspension fork!!
Either way, I like how it gives the modern fork a vintage look and adds the visual weight.

I thought the same thing, but that would need a much beefier beehive base to handle the stress. Plus I am not sure how well a double secret probation fork action would work. :). There are some really cool forks out there this year. It's gonna be fun pulling this together.

this bike is looking good, I searched for one of those forks but everyone i found either had too short of a head or the welded on brake tabs

Thanks man. I picked up a Proflex early last year for $50 on CL. Ended up selling the other parts for $280+ and I got a free Girvin. :D:cool:

your building just gets better and better !! love the direction your build is going in , Awesome !!

Thanks man. Hoping to get some build time tomorrow. I may be too busy with a few flip bikes I bought the past couple of weekends.

Redid the spacers and nuts on my front wheel and added these as my faux rocker beehive springer arm braces.

Seeing @flyingmachine 's grips, it reminded me that I had these yard sale shishkabob skewers. The handle springs may become accent springs.

Took starsNbars into Queenfish's garden and tried the accent springs midway

And down low. If I use them, I like them down low much better.

I even played around with the star chainring again (which I don't like again). I will probably use this Delta headlight shell to make my headlight. Better scale with the beehive. Now I just need to create a proper bracket for it all.
