I didn't run across the lock-up issue until I'd had the bike, oh, a year and a half or so. It may be a wear issue, I don't know. But I put that coaster brake to good use. It's about a 1/4 mile down a 6% grade from my house to Main Street, and that's the only brake this 50 lb bike has.
With the shifter you are using, is it indexed, or is it a friction shifter that you've got to "feel" for shift position? I could see where a IG hub would be a lot more sensitive to specific cable position & tuning than derailer gearing would be.
